I think this is AWESOME, everyone is a winner in this program and many dogs that were wasting away in shelters just waiting for their number to be picked in the lottery of death are now saved and become a beloved and respected service animal for a forever grateful loving friend. To start a program, there must be a sincere focus in helping the lives of the inmates... and to really make a difference to help rehabilitate the inmates. To warehouse inmates, punish them and then throw them back out into the community does not rebuild damage lives but rather it builds more anger and disrespect to authorities.

I hope that prison dog programs will base their programs on mutual respect and dignity... where love is the focus... more than control and intimidation because if you want people to return to society, focused on being better persons, then the ingredient of love needs to be included, rules to be followed but not to the point that a program would fold because an officer gave a hamburger to an inmate after speaking at a community school to children about the prison dog program. The DOC punished the officer for showing compassion to a prisoner. The 25 year veteran of the Department of Correction with an unblemished record was so hurt in being treated like that, that he quit the Department of Corrections and the Liberty Dog Program folded because the volunteers who were very supportive of this officer refused to carry on with a program that would treat their staff and the inmates the way this department of corrections did.

This is a program where inmates in prisons are training dogs to assist the disabled. The dogs are then placed with someone who needs a specially trained dog to assist them.

Also in other prison programs they raise future assistance dogs and guide dogs for the blind for existing training schools, thus cutting back the time that a disabled person must wait for a dog to assist them.

The third prison dog project is where inmates are taking unwanted dogs from animal shelters, then groom and train them to be good citizens. They are then placed back into the community as "paroled pets". This gives the dogs a second chance in life, exactly what the prisoners are wishing for in their own life.

The prison dog programs help the inmates learn how to become "other" centered, thus giving something back to society. The inmates learn needed skills in order to help them get jobs when they are released. They also learn responsibility, patience, tolerance, as well as being good trainers with kindness and love.

The Prison Dog Programs are developing in many prisons around the United States and other countries. It helps to bring a sense of calm in the institutional setting. The dogs are also a bridge between the inmates and the guards as well as with a disabled person to people in the community. When a disabled person in a wheel chair or a prisoner has a friendly dog by their side, people want to go up and greet them. The friendly dog then helps to break the tension.

Have you ever noticed how, sometimes, Christian teens seem unwilling to really do anything for God? Now, I must confess that I myself am sometimes prone to this spirit of do-nothing. Older people are also subject to it in many cases.

But surely I am not the only one that has noticed that often, Christian teens lapse into lethargy. They choose a week of fun and passive preaching (summer camp), over a week going out soul winning, or a week learning how to teach and lead children to the Lord (CYIA), or even just reading their Bible and praying!

They are unwilling to do something real for God, instead succumbing to the mentality that we must 'grow ourselves in the Lord'. But is there any more of a sure-fire way to grow then fulfilling the great commission- "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel." Is there any better way of coming closer to our Savior than telling others about him? Is there any better way then getting into His Word?

But why are we so willing to fritter away our time in 'fun' at a summer camp?

Simply put, because even we have become infected with the society of fun. We're inundated with it, every day. Every commercial, every ad, every program on the TV, promotes this society and the mentality behind it. They proclaim that we must be sexy, beautiful, and alluring. Why? To have fun. We have to eat certain foods and drink certain beverages. Why? To have fun.

We must go to summer camp. Why? To have fun. Oh yeah, and to grow in God.

Last year, my entire youth group came back from summer camp energized, on fire, and ready to reform and straighten up their lives. Six months later, all of them are right back where they started. I think it's partly because they didn't actually do anything with the knowledge and fire. They let it go to waste on 'reforming' them.

When you are burning with the gospel, when God is magnified in you, you will show it. You won't be able to keep it in. Sadly, I myself have sadly failed in this, something I am very ashamed of. I've allowed my flame to go out. Why? Because soul winning wasn't 'fun'.

Well of course it isn't! Walking up to total strangers and trying to get them to see that they're sinners, and on their way to eternal punishment, is not fun! But it's necessary. I walk by countless people each day, all of them without Christ. Yes, I understand I can't evangelize everyone, but what if my entire youth group got galvanized towards that goal?

We could start knocking doors, going out on street corners, etc. Go spend every day down in our local, mini 'ghetto' evangelizing instead of going to summer camp.

But that wouldn't be fun.

Now, this isn't just confined to summer activities. This applies to everything. Christian teens are unwilling to take out the trash for their sick mom. Christian teens are unwilling to go help the old lady down the street mow her lawn. Christian teens are unwilling to help someone walk their dog. Christian teens do all sorts of things that they shouldn't, and don't do all sorts of things that they should!

They're unwilling to read their Bible. They're unwilling to pray. They so easily pass over the good news, it's pathetic.

I'm going to stop here for a minute, because it's kind of an important point, I think.

Have you ever thought about what happened on the cross? Really thought about it? It's so easy to say- "Oh yeah, there was this guy named Jesus, who died on a cross for us, and then he was buried, and rose again three days later. Now he's in Heaven on the right hand of His Father. Oh yeah, he was God's son. And oh yeah, he died for our sins."

No joke, I have heard some people say it that way! Yet is that really accurate? Does that truly convey the sense of what happened in that time? Does that convey Jesus' sacrifice and suffering? Not a bit!

Last week at CYIA, the vast majority of the students there were charismatic. Yet they had such a fire, a desire to serve the Lord, a want to do whatever they could. They were happy if they could help the instructor take out the trash! I think I was probably the only independent baptist there, with the exception of a friend from church who was also there.

That is sad. The fact that kids who are Bible-believing and supposedly stand up for the 'truth' aren't willing to stand up for their savior is sad. The fact that we aren't willing to help evangelize is sad.

Well, I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting, but I have a lot going on in my head, so this is going to have to do.
